(KTVI - myFOXstl.com) -- Despite rising gasoline prices and fears people won't go on summer vacations there's hope in St. Louis that this year could be a good one for tourism.
Tourists mean more than 4 billion dollars a year to the St. Louis economy.
DeAnna Weaver is visiting St. Louis with her family, she told FOX 2 News, "We had planned to go to Gulf Shores Alabama for the Memorial Day weekend and due to the gas prices and expenses and everything we chose St. Louis because of all the free things."
While other towns like Branson offer free gasoline St. Louis doesn't have to.
Donna Andrews works with the St. Louis Visitors Commission she said, "We're cautiously optimistic that this year is going to be great." St. Louis is a day’s drive from many Midwestern cities and visitors like our free zoo, science center, art museum and history museum.
Donna Neighbors is visiting St. Louis, she said, "We can afford the gas if we have free things to go to when we get here."
The tourist industry employs more than 80 thousand people here.
Officials are also hoping St. Louisans don't travel and vacation right in their own backyard.
Brian McAfee is a local man who was visiting the zoo with his family, he said, "Every year we travel to Lake of the Ozarks a lot of those trips will be cut down and we're looking at doing stuff around St. Louis."
